What are the school's policies on student conduct?

Student Handbook - All Western Sierra Charter Schools take pride in the professional and positive learning environments provided for our students. This quality learning environment is everyone’s responsibility. In addition to the rigorous curriculum, excellent 20 staff, and proper facilities, we have high expectations for our students. We expect all students will treat other students, staff, and campus visitors with courtesy and respect. Reports of verbal or physical abuse will be reported to and dealt with by the Principal (Ed Code 48900 offense). Any student who feels another participant is disrupting the student’s learning environment is strongly encouraged to report that misconduct to the teacher, Principal, Assistant Principal, and/or Safety and Supervision Specialist as soon as possible.

Western Sierra Charter Schools desires to create and maintain an environment of mutual respect and personal responsibility for everyone. The following student behavioral expectations are required of all students while on campus. Violating any of these behavioral expectations may result in a Non-Compliance letter, loss of privilege of onsite classes, and/or termination of enrollment.

Is there a school uniform or dress code?

Student Handbook - I understand that I must dress modestly. I will ensure that I am properly covered (not exposing my chest, midriff or bottom). I must dress neatly. I may not wear any clothing with profanity or 22 images or messages which are sexually explicit or violent. Further, I may not wear clothing with images or messages regarding alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, etc.

What are the policies on attendance?

Student Handbook - The parent/primary teacher must daily verify that the student engaged in assigned educational activities through the School Pathways Parent/Student online portal “Student Learning Log”. At the end of each learning period, the parent/primary teacher must confirm the learning log through an e-signature in School Pathways. This must be submitted on time at the end of each learning period. Failure to submit attendance on time is treated as non-compliance. (See "Termination of Enrollment.") Many families teach on weekends and during holiday and summer breaks, however, we can only count the days listed on the school calendar for attendance.

Do I have to live in Oakhurst or Fresno to attend WSCS?

Charter schools can serve students who reside in any bordering county to the county that charter school maintains its charter. Mountain Home Charter School is in Madera County. We will take qualifying students who reside out of county as long as the majority of students we serve reside in Madera County. We primarily serve Fresno, Madera, and Mariposa Counties.

Aren't you just helping families who "homeschool"?

We have many similar benefits of homeschooling, and other necessary and helpful elements that make our program best referred to as a "personalized learning" program. It is true that much of the student's work is done independently, but we also support them with on-site classes, assessment, and academic counseling. The independent portion is guided with frequent meetings, specialized curriculum, and significant assessment.

What happens if a student is not successful in this type of program?

According to Charter Law, we are obligated to set standards for success and academic growth which students must meet in order to continue with us. We work with students to give them every chance to continue, but if a student cannot achieve in this setting we refer them back to the comprehensive campus.
